He took his oath on the balcony of Federal Hall in New York City, the first capital of the U.S. No other American has been honored more than Washington. The nation's capital, Washington D.C., was named for him. The state of Washington is the only state named after a President. The U.S. population was 4,900,000 in 1797, when Washington retired.
