| Beschrijving keerzijde | The Caesar Decentius is depicted in full military attire, draped and cuirassed, galloping on horseback to the right, his right arm raised and thrusting a spear downward at a prostrate or recoiling barbarian foe below. The barbarian, rendered in a submissive posture, grasps a spear and raises one hand in a gesture of supplication or defeat, a compositional device common to late Roman imperial iconography celebrating virtus. The divided legend VIRT-VS - AVGG, invoking the valor of the two Augusti, flanks the central equestrian group. The exergue carries the mint mark of the Rome officina. The overall composition conveys imperial military triumph in the grand tradition of Roman commemorative medallions. |
