Reverse description A sun in splendour radiates from the top of the field, its rays extending downward over a crowned rose and thistle symbolising the union of England and Scotland, which appear as a landmass rising from the surrounding sea. A scroll banner bearing the legend curves beneath the sun rays, and the date in Roman numerals is inscribed in the exergue below a ruled line.
