Beschrijving voorzijde Two U.S. Marines depicted in high relief against a backdrop of war-ravaged, bare trees evoking the aftermath of the Battle of Belleau Wood: one Marine kneels in a posture of mourning while the other stands at guard, both armed with rifles. The legend in the lower field reads as a direct quote from a battlefield report to the American Expeditionary Force, with designer's initials visible in the lower field.
