Obverse description At centre, a small circular medallion bearing a bust of Carl Linnaeus in left profile with the legend C. LINNAEUS BORN 1707 around. Radiating outward from this central medallion are eleven segments, each labelled with the name and number of a Linnaean plant class (classes 14 through 24), accompanied by engraved botanical illustrations of the corresponding stamens or plant parts. The design fills the entire field in a sunburst arrangement.
