Reverse description A richly detailed allegorical scene depicting the ceremonial welcome of Queen Victoria to the City of London. The Lord Mayor, Sir John Cowan, robed and wearing his chain of office, bows in greeting to the young Queen at centre, beneath a draped canopy surmounted by the royal arms. Britannia with her Union shield kneels to the right, winged Fame blows a trumpet at upper left, and Fortune with a cornucopia stands to the far left. The legend and date are inscribed in the lower exergue, with WELCOME arching across the upper field.
