Reverse description A multi-figure allegorical scene in high relief depicting Father Mathew standing to the left with his right arm raised in a gesture of blessing or address, facing a group of supplicants including men, women, and children, one of whom kneels before him. The circular legend HE REASONED ON TEMPERANCE runs around the upper field, and the date in Roman numerals MDCCCXLVII appears in the exergue. The engraver's signature L. WYON. MINT. is visible at the lower centre.
