Obverse description A detailed relief view of the entrance facade of the Thames Tunnel, depicting two arched tunnel portals with receding perspective showing the interior passageways. Above the tunnel entrance, the River Thames is shown with sailing ships on the water. The legend THAMES TUNNEL and date 1842 appear in the exergue below the central design. The engravers' names W. TAYLOR and WARRINGTON are inscribed on the left and right margins respectively.
