Obverse description Central field bears the coat of arms of the Cape of Good Hope: a shield featuring an elephant passant above a battlement, a chevron with three roundels, two floral rosettes, and a hunting horn in base, surmounted by a fully rigged three-masted sailing ship. A ribbon below the shield bears the motto IN MELIORA SPERA. The outer legend reads SOUTH AFRICAN EXHIBITION OF 1885, with a small decorative star ornament at the bottom.
