Reverse description The reverse features a raised relief depiction of the Plymouth Breakwater in profile across the centre of the field, dividing two blocks of inscribed text. The upper legend records the commencement date, dimensions, stone deposited, and cost of the breakwater, while the lower legend commemorates the striking of the medal by order of W. Stuart after 37 years of connection with the undertaking.

THIS MEDAL IN COMMEMORATION OF THE PLYMOUTH BREAKWATER, WAS STRUCK BY ORDER OF W.STUART, SUPERINTENDENT ENGINEER. AFTER A CONNECTION OF 37 YEARS WITH THAT UNDERTAKING. 22ND AUGt 1848.
