Obverse description Young laureate bust of Queen Victoria facing left, wearing a jewelled crown, her hair gathered at the nape. The circumferential legend runs around the upper portion of the field, with a decorative floral and thistle spray in the lower field below the truncation.

Reverse description An allegorical composition depicting a classically robed standing female figure (Britannia or Progress) extending a laurel wreath over a second robed female figure representing India, who holds a bouquet of agricultural produce; between them stands a young child bearing additional gifts. In the background to the left are cattle and tropical vegetation, and to the right a locomotive with wagons labelled 'INDIA', along with decorative vessels and a large gear wheel symbolising industry. The designer's and engraver's signatures appear in the lower field flanking the date.
