Obverse description A seated classical female figure in high relief, shown in three-quarter view, writing or reading on a tablet resting on her lap, with books at her side and an oil lamp on a tall pedestal to her right. The Latin legend STUDIO FALLENTE LABOREM arcs around the upper field, with the date MDCCCVII in the lower exergue. The engraver's signature W. WILSON appears along the base line.

Reverse description The arms of the London Institution in high relief at centre, comprising a quartered shield bearing a cross and various emblems of learning, surmounted by a radiant sun, with elaborate scrolled mantling to either side, and a lion passant as crest above on a wreath. The legend LONDON INSTITUTION arcs around the field, left and right respectively, with the number 500 prominently displayed in the lower field.
