Reverse description The entire field is filled with a multi-line commemorative inscription in raised capital lettering recording the projection, commencement and opening of the East Indian Railway. A circular border legend in smaller italic script runs around the full periphery of the die, reading: 'Prosper the work of our hands upon us; O prosper thou our handiwork.' The date A.D. MDCCCLX appears prominently in the lower field.

Reverse lettering PROSPER THE WORK OF OUR HANDS UPON US; O PROSPER THOU OUR HANDIWORK. THE EAST INDIAN RAILWAY PROJECTED BY ROWLAND MACDONALD STEPHENSON, GEORGE TURNBULL BEING CHIEF ENGINEER, WAS COMMENCED IN THE XV TH YEAR OF THE REIGN OF VICTORIA, JAMES ANDREW MARQUIS OF DALHOUSIE, K.T. BEING GOVERNOR GENERAL OF INDIA; AND WAS OPENED TO RAJMAHAL IN THE XXIV TH YEAR OF THE SAME GRACIOUS REIGN: CHARLES JOHN EARL CANNING, G.C.B. BEING VICEROY AND GOVERNOR GENERAL. A.D. MDCCCLX.
