Obverse description High-relief bare-headed bust of Queen Victoria facing left, wearing a small crown and with hair dressed in a chignon, set within a wide plain field. The legend VICTORIA REGINA is incused in spaced capitals along the left and right periphery respectively, within a raised border.

Reverse description The entire field is filled with a multi-line commemorative inscription in raised capital lettering recording the projection, commencement and opening of the East Indian Railway. A circular border legend in smaller italic script runs around the full periphery of the die, reading: 'Prosper the work of our hands upon us; O prosper thou our handiwork.' The date A.D. MDCCCLX appears prominently in the lower field.
