Reverse description Central shield bearing the arms of Cape Colony — quarterly with a lion passant in the lower quarters and cross-crosslets in the upper — flanked by two scrolls inscribed with the dates 1837 and 1897, and surmounted by the Royal Arms. Royal cyphers with crowns appear to either side. The whole is encircled by a wreath of laurel and the legends GOD BLESS OUR QUEEN above and CAPE COLONY below.
