| Obverse description | This token represents a boat with, in the background, the 3 towers of La Rochelle, guardians of the entrance to the port since the 14th century. They are the remains of the city`s fortifications. In order, from left to right, we have the Lantern Tower, the Chain Tower and the Saint-Nicolas Tower. In addition to its role as a lighthouse and a landmark for navigation, the Lantern Tower was used as a prison for a long time. Witnesses of this function, numerous graffiti constitute the memory of those who survived between its walls. Inscription on the upper edge. Succession of dots on the edge of the lower half. |
