Obverse description The obverse depicts a full-length figure of a woman in an antebellum ball gown standing in the left field, set against a relief map of Virginia with the state capital RICHMOND inscribed upon it. The legend VIRGINIA arcs across the upper field, while THE OLD DOMINION STATE curves along the lower rim, all within a beaded border.

Reverse description The reverse features a central legend VIRGINIA above the inscription ATTAINED STATEHOOD / JUNE 25, 1788, flanked by two laurel branches meeting at a scroll tablet bearing 10TH STATE at the base. At the top of the field a circular medallion depicts the state flower, the Dogwood blossom, surrounded by a ring of stars and the legend DOGWOOD. A small fleur-de-lis mintmark appears below the scroll, all within a beaded border.
