Reverse description The reverse displays the name ILLINOIS in large relief lettering across the center field, beneath a circular medallion depicting the Illinois state flower, the Native Violet, surrounded by a ring of stars and the inscription ILLINOIS NATIVE VIOLET. Below the central legend, the inscriptions ATTAINED STATEHOOD and DECEMBER 3, 1818 appear in two lines, with the designation 21ST STATE enclosed in a ribbon banner at the bottom. The whole is framed by two flanking laurel branches, and the Franklin Mint mark FM appears below the banner.
