Obverse description The obverse features a relief map of California with a star marking the state capital, Sacramento, inscribed within the outline. To the right, a bearded forty-niner gold prospector in period dress pans for gold. The legend CALIFORNIA arcs across the upper field, with THE GOLDEN STATE along the lower rim, and a small mintmaster's mark (CR) visible in the lower field.

Reverse description The reverse displays a central wreath of laurel branches flanking the bold inscription CALIFORNIA above ATTAINED STATEHOOD / SEPTEMBER 9, 1850. At the base of the wreath, a scroll cartouche bears the legend 31ST STATE. In the upper field, a circular medallion depicts the California Golden Poppy, the state flower, surrounded by stars and inscribed CALIFORNIA GOLDEN POPPY.
