Obverse description Relief outline map of the state of Alabama occupies the central field, with the capital city of Montgomery indicated by a five-pointed star and the name inscribed on the map. A cotton boll branch in high relief is superimposed over the left side of the map. The legend ALABAMA arcs along the upper field, and THE HEART OF DIXIE curves along the lower field; engraver's initials CR appear at the base of the map.

Reverse description The central field bears the bold legend ALABAMA above the inscription ATTAINED STATEHOOD / DECEMBER 14, 1819, with a scroll cartouche at the base reading 22ND STATE. At the top, a circular medallion depicts the state flower, the Camellia, surrounded by a ring of stars with the legend ALABAMA above and CAMELLIA below. Flanking the central field are two laurel branches in relief, and the Franklin Mint mintmark appears below the scroll.
