Obverse description A skeletal figure of Death straddles the bow of the SS Athenia, holding a flaming torch in one hand and a lit incendiary bomb in the other. The ship's name ATHENIA is incised on the hull in relief. The legend arcs across the upper field with the date 4 SEPTEMBER 1939, and the engraver's signature GUIDO GOETZ appears along the lower right rim.

Reverse description A seated male figure, depicted as Winston Churchill in formal attire, holds an unequal balance scale in his right hand, from which two bombs are suspended as weights. The legend EIN MEISTER DER LÜGE arcs around the upper field, with HÖLLEN-MASCHINE inscribed in the lower field.
