Obverse description A rampant bear, the heraldic symbol of Bern, supports the city's coat of arms with its forelegs while holding an upraised sword in its right paw and a liberty cap on a pole in its left. War trophies including a cannon, flags, a helmet, and other military accoutrements are arranged in relief around the base of the shield. The curved legend 'RESPUBLICA BERNENSIS' arcs across the upper field.
