| Obverse description | Central relief depicts the scientific research vessel Kegostrov in profile set against a world map rendered in a grid pattern, with Moscow indicated. Above the vessel, a shield-shaped emblem bears crossed anchors with the legends «АН» and «СССР», representing the Marine Expeditionary Work Department of the USSR Academy of Sciences.
