Obverse description The obverse features a large rampant lion in relief representing the Margraviate of Meissen, occupying the right portion of the field. Overlaid to the left is a detailed high-relief depiction of a Meissen commemorative thaler showing crossed swords and the legend CAUSA TRIUMPHANS BONA TANDEM in a decorative border. The event title and year appear as an incuse legend along the lower left rim.

Reverse description The reverse displays a vertically divided shield combining the coat of arms of Saxony (barry of ten or and sable with a crancelin) on the left and the emblem of the GDR (hammer and compass within a wreath) on the right, rendered in bold relief. Two multi-line text blocks flank the shield: the 40th anniversary of the GDR inscribed to the right, and the 900th anniversary of the enfeoffment of the House of Wettin with the Margraviate of Meissen inscribed to the left, both in incuse lettering.
