Obverse description A Powell & Mason Street cable car numbered 303, carrying passengers both inside and on the open rear platform, ascends a steep hill with Victorian-era buildings depicted in the background. Below the cable car, the mechanical cable and pulley system with a large wheel are shown in the lower field. The legend and date span arc along the lower rim, with the engraver's initials TRM visible at lower right.

Reverse description The obverse bears the full armorial seal of the City and County of San Francisco in high relief, depicting a shield charged with a steamship and rising sun, surmounted by a phoenix with spread wings. The shield is supported by a miner with a shovel at left and a sailor holding a sextant at right, with a plow and ship anchor at the base. A ribbon banner below the shield displays the city motto in two lines. The circular legend encircles the entire design, with a small mintmark S visible at the top of the inner field.
