The surrounding legend reads 'THE WELLINGTON STATUE LONDON ERECTED 1844' with an inscription in the exergue noting the statue was raised by public subscription at a total value of £10,500.

Reverse description Three-quarter perspective view of the Royal Exchange building in London in high relief, showing its classical portico with columns and a prominent bell tower to the right. The legend 'ROYAL EXCHANGE LONDON' arcs around the upper field, with a multi-line inscription in the exergue recording the laying of the first stone by H.R.H. Prince Albert on 19 January 1842 and the opening by H.M. Queen Victoria in 1844. The maker's name 'ALLEN & MOORE' is inscribed vertically along the left border.
