Obverse description Allegorical scene in high relief depicting Britannia, helmeted and holding a trident, presenting a youthful personification of New South Wales — holding a shepherd's crook — to a seated figure of France, enthroned and holding a sceptre, with an eagle at the base of her throne. A kangaroo appears in the right field. The engraver's signature L.C. WYON. F. appears in the lower centre, with the Roman date MDCCCLV in the exergue.

Reverse description The central field bears a raised circular legend panel inscribed PRODUCTS OF NEW SOUTH WALES SYDNEY 1854, surrounded by a richly detailed border of scenes in relief depicting rural and mining activities, native flora and fauna, a sailing ship at the base, and agricultural produce, all enclosed within a raised rim.
