Obverse description Truncated bust of Prince Henry, Duke of Gloucester, in right profile, wearing robes and decorations of the Order of St John, with the eight-pointed star prominent on his chest. To the left in the field, a shield bearing the cross of the Order with the motto PRO FIDE below. The circular legend reads HENRICVS GLOVCESTRAE DVX MAGNVS PRIOR around the upper rim, with the engraver's signature GILBERT BAYES and date 1946 visible in the lower right field.

Reverse description Frontal elevation of the Clerkenwell Gateway, the historic gatehouse of the Order of St John in London, rendered in detailed relief showing the arched entrance, flanking towers, and decorative panels with lions. The royal arms of the Order are displayed on a shield above the gateway, supported by heraldic beasts. The circular legend runs around the upper rim, with the motto PRO UTILITATE HOMINUM on a ribbon scroll below the gateway and the Roman numeral date MCMXXXIX in the exergue.
