Obverse description The obverse is hand-engraved in the field with the multiline inscription 'MANILA / P.I. / SURRENDERED / AUG. 13 / 1898', embellished with decorative foliate and scrollwork ornaments between the lines. Two suspension loops are mounted at the top of the round planchet.

Reverse description The reverse displays the Spanish colonial arms of the Philippines: a crowned quartered shield bearing the castles of Castile and the lion of León, with a central escutcheon of the Bourbons, flanked by the Pillars of Hercules with a ribbon inscribed PLUS ULTRA. The circular legend reads ISLAS FILIPINAS above and UN PESO below, with mintmaster initials S.G. and V. in the field. The rim is reeded.
