Obverse description The arms of the City of Bern — a diagonal-banded shield bearing a bear passant — displayed on an ornate baroque pedestal surmounted by a mural crown and draped curtain between two columns. The shield is supported on the left by Abundantia holding a cornucopia and on the right by Caritas nursing two children. A grotesque mask decorates the base of the pedestal. The encircling legend reads RESPUBLICA BERNENSIS.
