Obverse description The field bears a high-relief depiction of a Portuguese nautical astrolabe recovered from the Nau Madre de Deus, sunken in 1610 at Nagasaki, Japan, prominently displayed at top center. Flanking the central text block are two heraldic insignia in relief: the C.M.N. (Naval Military Club) emblem to the left and the C.S.A. (Army Sergeants Club) emblem to the right. The surrounding and lower legends reference the 17th Council of Europe Exhibition of Art, Science and Culture and celebrate the Portuguese Discoveries.
