| Obverse description | Half-length effigies of Jan van Riebeeck, wearing a wig and lace collar, and his wife Maria de la Queillerie, in a cap and shawl, slightly turned towards each other in high relief. Van Riebeeck holds a scroll in his right hand, with the engraver's monogram 'MP' visible at the base. The circular legend in incuse (hollow) letters reads: 'JAN VAN RIEBEECK * 1619+1677' on the left and 'MARIA DE LA QUEILLERIE * 1629+1664' on the right, with grape leaf and tendril ornaments at the foot. |
