Obverse description The Rhodesian coat of arms in high relief at centre, supported by two sable antelopes and surmounted by a Zimbabwe bird, with the motto NOMINE DIGNA on a scroll below. The date 19 75 flanks the arms in the field. The border of the decagonal medal features ten panels, each containing a floral or foliate device accompanied by years ranging from 1965 to 1977, marking successive years of independence. The maker's mark M.M.CO. appears below the coat of arms.

Reverse description Three portrait busts in relief within a central medallion: Cecil John Rhodes at top centre flanked by Sir Charles Coghlan at left and Ian Douglas Smith at right, all set against a foliate background with a Zimbabwe bird emblem below Rhodes. A ribbon banner beneath bears the inscription RHODESIAN INDEPENDENCE. The lower portion displays heraldic devices including a lion passant. The surrounding legend on the decagonal border reads the names of the three figures.
