Obverse description The obverse depicts a high-relief scene of the Explorer I rocket launching from its launch pad, surrounded by billowing exhaust clouds, with the launch tower visible to the left. The legend FIRST U.S. EARTH SATELLITE curves along the upper rim, and JANUARY 31, 1958 arcs along the lower rim, with small five-pointed stars flanking both sides of the field.

Reverse description The reverse features a polished dark field enclosed by a decorative oval border with ornamental corner devices. The year 1958 appears in a cartouche at the top, and the central field bears multiple lines of incuse text listing notable historical events of that year. A small Franklin Mint mark appears at the bottom of the field.
