Beschrijving voorzijde The obverse features a detailed high-relief scene depicting Drake's oil well at Titusville, Pennsylvania, with a tall wooden derrick dominating the background and a log building to the left. In the foreground, two figures in period 19th-century dress stand prominently, one wearing a top hat and holding a document, while workers and barrels are visible in the middle ground. The legend arcs around the border, with four small stars punctuating the lower rim.

Beschrijving keerzijde The reverse features a polished, lightly recessed field enclosed within an ornate rope-and-corner-knot border frame. An decorative cartouche at the top bears the year 1859 in relief. The field is engraved with multi-line text listing key historical events of that year, and a small Franklin Mint mark appears at the bottom center.
