Reverse description The central field depicts a crowned oak tree flanked by a lion and lioness as counter-rampant supporters, rising above stylised waves rendered in low relief. The war dates 1939 and 1945 appear to either side of the supporters, and the two-line inscription THE DEFENCE MEDAL is positioned in the lower exergue beneath the waves.
