Obverse description Truncated bust of David Livingstone three-quarters to the right, wearing a coat and bow tie, with a moustache and side-whiskers. The circular legend around the border reads DAVID LIVINGSTONE BORN BLANTYRE 1813 DIED ILALA 1873, separated by raised dots within a beaded border. The engraver's signature ALLAN WYON SC. appears below the truncation.

Reverse description A scene depicting St. Paul preaching at the altar of the Unknown God in Athens, with several attendant figures in classical robes surrounding him. To the left, a seated figure writes on a scroll beside a flaming altar; in the centre, a kneeling figure bows before the altar inscribed ΑΓΝΩΣΤΩ ΘΕΩ (To the Unknown God); to the right stand two standing figures, one of whom holds a staff. Classical columns form the background. The exergue bears the Greek legend ΕΙΣ ΤΟΝ ΚΟΣΜΟΝ ΑΠΑΝΤΑ in two lines.
