Obverse description Winged figure of Mercury in high relief, soaring above the sea with right arm raised holding a wreath and left arm cradling a cornucopia spilling abundance over the shoreline below. A radiant sunburst fills the field behind the figure, with a sailing ship visible to the lower left. The peripheral legend curves around the upper and lower rim.

Obverse lettering TO COMMEMORATE THE UNION OF SOUTH AFRICA 31ST MAY 1910
Reverse description Central imperial crown surmounts four circular cameos arranged in a quatrefoil pattern, each bearing the coat of arms of one of the four constituent territories of the Union, identified by labels: 'CAPE COLONY' at top, 'TRANSVAAL' at left, 'ORANGE FREE STATE' at right, and 'NATAL' at bottom. The date 'MAY' and '1910' flank the upper cameo. The entire composition is enclosed within a rope border tied at the base, with the peripheral legend along the outer rim.
