Obverse description The obverse reproduces the design of the Spanish €1 coin: a right-facing effigy of King Juan Carlos I occupies the central field, with the legend ESPAÑA arcing along the left inner border and the royal mintmark below it. Twelve stars of the European Union encircle the outer rim, and the date 2002 appears in the exergue, divided into two groups by a central star.
