Obverse description Head-on frontal view of the French cruiser Marseillaise advancing through choppy seas, rendered in high relief with detailed superstructure, gun turrets, and bow wave. Billowing clouds fill the field on either side of the vessel. The engraver's signature GEORGES GUIRAUD appears to the lower left, and the legend arcs along the bottom rim.

Reverse description An allegorical figure of Marianne, draped in classical robes, strides forward facing right with arms outstretched, brandishing a sword in her left hand and gesturing toward the right with her raised right arm. A large billowing flag unfurls behind her in the upper field. Surrounding her in the background are multiple ranks of soldiers from different historical eras marching to the right, their rifles and bayonets visible in massed formation on both sides of the composition.
