Obverse description The central field depicts the British revenue schooner Gaspee engulfed in flames, her masts and rigging shown in detailed relief against a dark background. A longboat with crew members is shown in the foreground rowing away from the burning vessel. The curved legend along the upper rim reads 'BURNING OF THE GASPEE · JUNE 9, 1772', with the engraver's initials 'ES' in the lower field.
