| Obverse description | In the foreground, a reclining nude river god (the Scheldt, inscribed SCALD) faces left, accompanied by a jug and fruits; behind him stands a bearded male figure wearing a winged helmet, and above both a nude male figure identified with Mercury reclines dynamically, extending a caduceus in one hand and holding a cogwheel in the other. In the background, a detailed panorama of the Antwerp skyline with a large ocean liner steaming along the Scheldt river is rendered in low relief. The crowned Antwerp coat of arms appears to the right, and the engraver's signature JOSUE DUPON is inscribed in the field. |
