Obverse description The obverse bears three portrait busts in high relief of the Apollo 8 crew in spacesuits: commander Frank Borman prominently centered at the top, with W. Anders (Co-Pilot) at lower left and J. Lovell (Navigator) at lower right. The arched legend COMMANDANT FRANK BORMAN runs along the upper periphery, while the names W.ANDERS - J.LOVELL with their respective titles CO-PILOT and NAVIGATOR are inscribed in the lower field. The fineness mark 1000 appears at the very bottom.

Reverse description The reverse depicts a schematic of the Apollo 8 mission in relief, showing a stylized globe of Earth at lower left and a smaller cratered Moon at upper right, connected by a trajectory line with the spacecraft shown in mid-flight. The arched legend WELTRAUMFAHRT > APOLLO 8 runs along the upper periphery, with ZUM MOND / ca 800 000 Km below it, and the bold inscription 10x / RUND UM / DEN MOND in the right field. Mission dates Start: 21.XII. 13.51h and Landung: 27.XII. 16.51h are recorded in the lower field, above the date 1968 in the exergue.
