Obverse description Conjoined busts to left of A.E. Nordenskiöld (foreground) and A.A.L. Palander (background), both in high relief, filling the field. A small star appears at the top of the rim, and the engraver's signature is visible at the base of the busts. The names of the two subjects arc along the left and right borders of the coin in incuse lettering.

Reverse description Starboard-side view of the SS Vega under full sail and steam, navigating through Arctic waters with ice floes in the foreground and a rocky coastline in the background. The legend arcs along the upper border, and a rectangular exergue below a horizontal line contains a five-line dedicatory inscription in Latin identifying the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences as the issuing authority and giving the date in Roman numerals.
