Issued to mark the 400th anniversary of Hudson's 1609 voyage up the river that now bears his name, this medal was produced in conjunction with the Quadricentennial celebrations jointly organized by the United States and the Netherlands. The Half Moon — a replica of Hudson's original vessel — sailed from New York to Albany that same year, retracing the route Hudson navigated while employed by the Dutch East India Company, searching for a northwest passage he never found.
