| Obverse description | The central field depicts an interlaced composition of three stylized animals or birds with intertwining bodies, rendered in polychrome enamel (red, blue, green, and cream) with gilt outlines, inspired by the illuminated manuscript decoration of the Book of Kells. The inner field is surrounded by a border of Celtic knotwork in green enamel and gilt, and a beaded rim. The legend 'BOOK OF KELLS' appears in relief along the lower portion of the border. |
