Obverse description The central field depicts an interlaced composition of three stylized animals or birds with intertwining bodies, rendered in polychrome enamel (red, blue, green, and cream) with gilt outlines, inspired by the illuminated manuscript decoration of the Book of Kells. The inner field is surrounded by a border of Celtic knotwork in green enamel and gilt, and a beaded rim. The legend 'BOOK OF KELLS' appears in relief along the lower portion of the border.

Reverse description The central field features a stylized evangelist figure with a haloed head and elaborate interlaced wings and drapery, rendered in polychrome enamel (red, blue, cream, and green) with gilt outlines, depicting the lion symbol of Saint Mark as found in the Book of Kells illuminations. A Celtic knotwork border in green enamel and gilt surrounds the inner field, with a beaded rim at the edge. The legend 'THE LION OF MARK' arcs around the upper portion of the border, and 'BOOK OF KELLS' appears along the lower portion.
