Obverse description Right-facing bust of Pope Pius IX in high relief, wearing the zucchetto and richly embroidered pontifical vestments. The field is decorated with a repeating small cross motif. The circular legend reads PIO IX PONTIFICI MAXIMO AN XXIV, with the engraver's signature L. PENIN A LYON inscribed in the lower field. The medal is fitted with an integral suspension loop at the top.
