Sancho IV struck these meajas during the opening years of his reign, a period defined by the political fallout from his father Alfonso X's failed attempt to disinherit him. The Santiago type takes its name from the Santiago de Compostela mint, one of several ecclesiastical mints operating under royal license in this period — an arrangement that gave cathedral chapters a direct stake in the kingdom's small-change supply.
AB#309 is among the lighter billon issues of the reign, reflecting the continued debasement trend inherited from Alfonso's later monetary disorder.
