Sancho IV seized the Castilian throne in 1284 by displacing his own nephew, Alfonso de la Cerda, triggering a succession dispute that fractured the kingdom for decades. The meaja — half a blanca in the Castilian hierarchy — was the smallest practical unit of account, and Burgos mint production of this type falls within a reorganization of the billon coinage undertaken almost immediately after Sancho's coronation. AB#308 is among the more elusive attributions in the series; the Burgos specimens are distinguished from contemporaneous Toledo output by subtle die characteristics that have generated ongoing disagreement in the specialist literature.
